Abyss_03 WIP

Abyss_03 is a roguelike escort mission game where you protect your spaceship from asteroids and gather biomass in order to fly home again.

The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 by a student team of one programmer, me and one other designer. We started developing the game in our fourth semester with the mission, not to create a complete, playable game but to experiment and try out new things as much as we could. And we did just that. The game is in a very early stage and the development will be continued at a later point in time.

My contributions to this project:

I created the concept art for our character as well as the spaceship. Find more about that step under concept art. After that, I handed over the character concept art to our 3D artist and created the spaceship in 3D using Blender. The details like the label "03" were added in Krita. Finally, I placed the asset in Unreal Engine 5 into the scene.

Rotate the model by dragging it with the left mouse button. By dragging it with the right mouse button you move the model around.

With one finger you can turn the model and with two fingers you can move it around and zoom.

For the thruster of the spaceship, I experimented with different methods. First I tested the Niagara particle systems and then I tried out solution with a simple cylinder with a blue fire texture mapped around it. In the end, we decided to go with the latter method, as it better matched our vision for the game.

After that I experimented with different variations of biomass shaders and wormholes. I had to learn that shaders and materials cannot be directly exported from Blender to Unreal Engine, so I looked for a solution directly in Unreal.

I also played around with shaders a bit, as we had originally agreed to use a PS1/pixel shader for our game. I also tried out a cel shader, but due to time constraints, none of the shaders made it into the current version of the game.
